Lethal Injection on Trial
Capital punishment by lethal injection is temporarily halted in USA in expectation of the US Supreme Court’s ruling on whether this kind of execution leads to a humane and painless death of those sentenced to die. On December 13, 2007 an execution went wrong in Florida, when the execution of Angel Dieves Diaz, sentenced in 1986, lasted for 34 minutes, with indications that he was dying a painful death. Questions for reflection and discussion: Is there such a thing as civilized, humane, dignifying execution? How ethical is capital punishment? Would Jesus of Nazareth approve of capital punishment even if it were done in the most benevolent way?
