God and Global Warming

The issues related to global warming are debated more and more today. A former USA vice president Al Gore won Nobel Peace Prize 2007 for his concerns and activities related to the global warming issues. Some churches and church leaders are divided over how much should the Church and its mission be focused on the issue. Many believe that the spiritual salvation of people in the perishing world should remain the only concern of the Church.

Here is a segment aired on PBS, USA, on Friday October 26, 2007, that shares a discussion among several Evangelical pastors and scientists, that may provide some food for thought.

I’m startled by the final comments in the clip.
“If we just be what God wanted us to be, this whole thing would take care of itself.”
“If human beings were to act the way Jesus Christ taught, we would not be having this problem.”
Do those people actually believe that the most effective way a church could use its power to avoid climate change would be to endeavor to have every single person on the planet act exactly the same (as Jesus taught) - and in doing so, this would alter the fundamental rules of physics, biology and chemistry; removing the climate change problem?
Those people are simply stupid.
It’s time for action. It is not time for nonsensical belief in ‘God’.

The program assumed all were on board re the cause of Global Warming and there are just different evangelical responses to the “man-made” problem. Recently a British judge ruled that there are about 11 inconsistensies in Al Gore’s movie re Global Warming to be advised about before seeing the movie. The earth may be going through a warm spell but I wouldn’t be too quick to believe all that’s being said about it.

I disagree with those who want to make a disconnect between the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the global warming issue. The basic message of the gospel, according to John 3:16, is God’s love of the world. Our response is to accept God’s love of us, to trust in an above other accepting powers, and to gratefully love the world that God loves. To be sure, we love the world in God and not above God, but our response is still love the world.

If we love the world in this sense, and if the facts about global warming are really what they appear to be, then we must do something about this issue. The challenge is to rise above our normal parochial concerns, as important as they may be, and think about the world and the people in it now in the future.

How can one separate proclamation of the Gospel from our responsibility to be accountable stewards over our environment? What a cliche that “If we would just be there where God wants us to be this thing would just take care of itself”! What does it mean? Isn’t the spiritual and moral cooling of the day also responsible for the increase in arrogance and indifference by which we are runing our environment? Any though on Revelation 11:18 about God judging “those who destroy the earth”?
